Smart Cities Challenge

  • Category: Alchemix, Capacity Building, Innovation Facilitation, Knowledge Exchange

The Smart Cities Mission is one of Indian Government’s most ambitious and transformative initiatives, connecting urban renewal and transformation into an innovative, venture type approach that invites Municipal Leaders to really take on the challenge of transformation for their cities. An aspect of the Mission is the Smart Cities Challenge through which the Ministry of Urban Development has selected 98 cities in its first round to compete for a special Smart Cities Fund that will help winning cities to get seed funding from the Central and State Governments to fund specific projects in their cities. Each aspirant city has to formulate its vision, strategy and plan to address urban challenges including city-wide improvements and area-based developments incorporating intense engagements with citizens, identifying ideas that are appropriate to its local context, resources and level of citizen aspiration.

Innovation Alchemy is the Program Design Partner working with Bloomberg Philanthropies, supporting the MoUD is a strategic capacity building program for the competition cities, enabling a large scale knowledge exchange with global hubs of urban transformation. As a part of this program, Innovation Alchemy supported the Bloomberg Philanthropies team to design and implement an enriching 2-day Ideas Camp for over 250 Municipal Leaders during the application writing process, connecting the leaders with global and Indian practitioners. Thereafter, we leveraged our Alchemix platform and customised it in the form of Innovation Wednesday/ Friday Sessions, web cast live to engage Municipal Leaders across India in one of the largest, technology enabled, capacity building programs in India.

Watch Dr. Sameer Sharma, Mission Director, Smart Cities Mission, respond to Municipal Leaders in a live interaction over a webcast, facilitated by Parvathi Menon. Over 500 participants joined this live, open knowledge exchange discussion.
